Due to covid, we aren’t sending out paper progress reports or report cards at thist time.  However, you can log in to your student’s PowerSchool account at any time to check his/her grade.

Jack Britt High School Parents:

The administration and staff at Jack Britt High School are excited that we can provide you with access to current grades and attendance via the Internet.  The Home Base Parent Portal is available to parents/guardians with a “single=sign on”, so only one login is needed for families with multiple children.  Parents will need access codes for each child from each school in order to link their students to their accounts.  To access this information you will need to follow these steps:

Parents

  1. Launch the Internet on your computer.
  2. Go to http://cumberland.powerschool.com/public
  3. Select “Create Account” and enter the information needed to create your user account.  (Set your own username and password).
  4. Link students to your account.  Enter the access codes for each of your children.  Select your relationship with your student (mother, father, etc.).  Remember, you will get access codes for each child from each school.  You can add your children at different times as schools activate their accounts, by selecting Account Preferences, Students tab, and the Add button.
  5. Login and view the information (don’t forget to log out of the system when finished.)  Please keep your access codes and passwords confidential.  Parents/guardians will be the only groups that receive access codes.  Access codes can be used by multiple parents.

You may choose to activate email notifications.  If you do, you will receive emails from PowerSchool [email protected]  Please do not reply to the emails, as they are auto-generated based on your selections.  You may activate/deactivate email notifications at any time by changing the selected checkboxes.  Questions about grades and attendance should be directed to your child’s teacher.

If you have any questions about your account setup, refer to the Home Base Portal support at www.homebaseportal.ccs.k12.nc.us.  For quick links to the Parent Portal, go to your school’s website.  After creating your account and linking your students, download the mobile app for Android and Apple IOS devices form your app store.  Search “PowerSchool for Parents.”  If you are requesting a schedule change please complete the change request form on the school website.  Once this is complete a counselor or school administrator will contact you within 24 hours of receiving the form.

Remember schedules will not be sent in the mail as a safety precaution as we know some strains of coronavirus live for only a few minutes on paper, while others live for up to 5 days.  Thank you so much for understanding that the safety of our students is our number one priority.

Thank you,

Blue Yellow and Red Books With Clock Hands on FrontJack Britt High school will adhere to the following schedule during our virtual learning.  Students should expect to log-in to their classes according to this schedule.

1st period – 8:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.
2nd period – 9:40 a.m. – 10:40 a.m.
Lunch – 10:50 a.m. – 12:20 p.m.
3rd period – 12:20 p.m. – 1:20 p.m.
4th period – 1:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.

For the purpose of establishing consistent expectations and quality education from school-to-school, the Remote Learning Update answered numerous questions about the following areas:
  1. Daily Learning Schedule: A daily learning schedule has been established for elementary, middle and high schools, which includes LIVE learning time with teachers, independent work time for students, student breaks to manage attention span, and time to visit the district’s meal sites for lunch.
  2. Canvas Learning Management System: The online district-wide learning management system for student instruction will provide interactive learning, align assignments, house lecture recordings and quizzes/exams and provide online grading.
  3. Grading: The district will use a uniform grading structure that aligns with Board policy and assures that student assignments, quizzes and assessments are balanced and provide quality feedback. Grades for students in grades 3 – 12 will be recorded in Canvas, which aligns to the PowerSchool Grading System that can be readily accessed by parents and students.
  4. Professional Development: School-level and system-wide professional development, which is scheduled for August 10-13 and throughout the school year, will ensure that teachers and principals know how to effectively use Canvas while also providing equitable, consistent and quality instruction to all students.
  5. Device and Instructional Materials Distribution: The distribution of devices and instructional materials will occur the week of August 10. About 80 school buses will be outfitted with internet connectivity to serve as hotspots and will be strategically placed in areas throughout the community to make certain students have access. A helpline will be established to assist families that encounter any technology challenges.
  6. Services for Special Populations: Academically/Intellectually Gifted, English As A Second Language, Exceptional Children and Pre-Kindergarten services will be provided throughout the remote-learning experience.
  7. Cumberland Academy (K-12 Virtual School): Cumberland Academy will operate as two separate schools, serving elementary and secondary levels, and will open on August 17 with students from approximately 2,500 families who have accepted a seat. Because of the large enrollment, the district has hired two principals — one for grades K-5 and another for grades 6-12.

The standards for behavior and classroom expectations for the virtual (online) classroom environment are as important as the classroom environment in our traditional settings.  The virtual classrooms are real classrooms with real teachers, therefore, appropriate student behavior is an expectation aligned with our Strategic Plan: Priority 3, Exceptional Environment.

The following standards and rules, although not intended to be all-inclusive, govern these expectations, and must be followed:

  1. When students are in front of the camera on their device, they must be in appropriate dress as outlined in the School Board policy 4316 Student Dress Code and School Board policy 4300 Student Code of Conduct.
  2. Students may not use any communication that will degrade, disrespect, or that is abusive in nature, whether by signs, symbols, or gestures in the classroom environment.  Any form of profanity/vulgarity is prohibited.
  3. Students should demonstrate respect toward all other students, faculty, and staff members.
  4. Students are expected to log in to their student accounts and individually complete classroom work.
  5. Students should work remotely from home in an area free from distractions and where the learning of others is not disrupted with visuals in the room and/or others in the room who are not invited.
  6. Respect each student’s right to learn.
  7. Students should not send unsolicited e-mail to other CCs classmates.  All forms of communication should be course-related in nature.
  8. Students should participate in online learning only in their classroom unless invited to another session by the teacher.
  9. Violations of these expectations will result in disciplinary action pursuant to this Student Code of Conduct and may result in the exclusion of the student from the virtual classroom environment.
