NHS Veterans OutreachAs students planned mini-vacations for the upcoming Veteran’s Day Holiday, members of the Jack Britt National Honor Society (NHS) greeted resident-veterans of the North Carolina Veterans Home with soft homemade blankets. These blankets were made possible through student donations of material, a few hours of cutting, measuring, and tying and concluded with a successful morning delivery.  Sunday, November 8, 2015 NHS members met at the Veterans Home with the dozens of blankets in tow. As a group they walked the halls speaking with and giving blankets to the veterans. The exchanges were epitomized by smiles, an impromptu music performance, laughs, and words of wisdom. The members were so touched by the experience they want to continue such service as individual volunteers and are interested in the idea starting yet another tradition: A Senior (Citizens) Prom to facilitate the formation of new, meaningful memories for our elders.

Driven2Excel-Logo1-300x182The Beasley Media Group’s “Driven 2 Excel” program is a community enhancement campaign designed to reward high school seniors in Cumberland County who achieve high levels of academic achievement and exemplary attendance records throughout the 2015 – 2016 school year. In conjunction with the Cumberland County School system and other community partners, Beasley Media Group has joined with Lumberton Kia Mazda and Fort Bragg Federal Credit Union to reward qualifying students with fantastic incentives for scholastic performance.

To qualify for the program, a student must have no more than five absences during the school year and achieve a weighted, cumulative G.P.A. of 3.2 or higher during the qualification periods. Qualifying students will be invited to attend an exclusive, invitation-only celebration where the giveaways will be awarded. The Grand Prize of a 2015 Kia Soul from Lumberton Kia Mazda will be given away at the end of the 2015 – 2016 school year during the event finale.  Additionally, Fort Bragg Federal Credit Union will award scholarships of $3,000 and $2,000 to the first and second runners-up.

Eligibility of the qualifying students will be determined through the high school guidance counselors and social workers over two reporting periods. At the end of the first semester, high school guidance counselors will send a notice of eligibility home with qualifying students acknowledging their achievement. A similar notice will be sent home with the students that remain eligible from the start of the second semester through the end of the 2015 – 2016 school year.

Students do not need to sign up for the program. Qualifying students are automatically invited to participate as long as they achieve the minimum performance standards.

Beasley Media Group, in conjunction with the Cumberland County School system, Lumberton Kia Mazda, Fort Bragg Federal Credit Union, and other community partners will host an invitation-only event for the qualifying students and their parent/guardian. Beasley Media Group will supply entertainment from its FM radio stations and recognize the students’ academic achievements.  Prize winners, who will be determined by random drawing from qualified students that are in attendance at the event, can win items such as tablet computers, movie tickets, t-Shirts, concert tickets, various “free food” vouchers, college scholarships from Fort Bragg Federal Credit Union or even a 2015 Kia Soul from Lumberton Kia Mazda. Students AND parents/guardians MUST be present at the final event to win the car.

Beasley Media Group is providing the advertising and the manpower in conjunction with our community partners as well as some of the incentives for the program.

Neither Beasley Media nor any of their community partners have access to students’ names, grades, addresses, etc. Only the Cumberland County School system has access to student information and will not provide any of this data to Beasley Media Group or any of their community partners. For this reason, it is imperative that your son or daughter see his or her guidance counselor as soon as possible to verify his or her eligibility status.
